  • checklist1 Mississippi Unemployment Insurance Eligibility Requirements

Each state has its own eligibility requirements when it comes to approving applications for unemployment insurance benefits. If you live in Mississippi, you should understand what these requirements are and how your actions can affect your eligibility into the program. Some of the requirements are identical to the requirements of other state unemployment insurance programs. For instance, all states require eligible unemployed workers to have lost their job due to no fault of your own. If you resign from your job or commit serious negligence or a felony, you will most likely not qualify for benefits.

Other general requirements include being able and willing to work. Some people simply do not want a secular job, they are no longer part of the workforce and do not qualify for benefits. You must also claim for benefits weekly. This weekly filing allows the unemployment insurance agency to monitor your progress in searching for a job.

However, there are other requirements that vary by state. This article will focus on the financial and legal eligibility criteria for workers living or working in Mississippi.

    - Register for work at your local WIN Job Center. If you do not register, the Employment Security commission will assume you are either unable or unwilling to work and will stop all benefits.

    - You must have worked a minimum of two quarters in your last base period. Remember a base period includes the first four quarters of the last five completed quarters. Each year has five quarters which include January to March, April to June, July to September and October to December.

    - During one of those quarters you must have earned a minimum of $780 or more.

    - During your entire base period you must have earned at least 40 times your weekly benefit amount. We will teach you how to calculate your weekly benefit amount in another post. However, notice that the maximum weekly benefit amount in Mississippi is $235. If you qualify for the maximum benefit amount, you must have earned at least $9,400 during your base period. The maximum amount of benefits you can receive in Mississippi is a third of your income during your base period or 26 times your weekly benefit amount, whichever is less.

Notice that if you do not qualify for benefits under the standard base period you can apply for consideration under an alternative base period that includes your four last completed quarters.
