Unemployed workers that wish to receive unemployment benefits in the state of Mississippi must apply to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. This article will look into how unemployed workers should go about filing for unemployment compensation in Mississippi.
Basic Requirements
Although we will not go into the ins and outs of Mississippi’s Unemployment Compensation eligibility criteria in this article, we will look at some basic requirements for workers applying for UI. First, you must have worked in Mississippi during your base period. Your base period includes the first four quarters (12 months) of the last completed five quarters since the date you file your first application for UI benefits. If you worked in another state, you should apply for unemployment benefits in the state you worked during your base period. If you worked in two or more states, you must determine in which states you qualify for benefits. Both these operations are done with an interstate claim (more on that in future posts).
You will also need a social security number, a valid mailing address, phone number, as well as the names, addresses of all your employers in the last 18 months. If you are not an American citizen, you will need an alien registration number or Visa number.
Filing the Claim
If your application is approved, you will need to register with the Mississippi Workforce Investment Network, also known as WIN. Click here for a map and contact details of all WIN job centers in Mississippi. The WIN service will help you with job searching, training and other career advancement moves.
If you meet these basic requirements, you are ready to file your application for unemployment insurance benefits. You can do this online, by clicking here, or by calling 601-855-3133 (inside Mississippi) or 1-888-844-3577. Once you file for benefits you will undergo an eligibility review to see if you qualify for benefits under the Mississippi unemployment law. Be prepared to answer questions on your work history. You will need to provide information on how much you earned at each place of employment and the reasons your employment terminated. Notice this eligibility review will continue even if your application is approved. While receiving benefits you could be asked to report to a local unemployment office and complete an eligibility review questionnaire. In addition to this, you will need to file your weekly benefits either by phone or online. Weekly benefits filing requires you to report any earnings you received during the week you are claiming for as well as assurance you are actively seeking employment while on benefits.
